Description

This is a limited edition photomechanical print, after an original watercolor by the American regionalist artist Paul Sawyier (1865-1917), titled The Singing Bridge. The work depicts an atmospheric, impressionistic street scene in Frankfort, Kentucky, looking toward the truss bridge from the south, with the tower of the former post office situated to the left. The composition is rendered in a soft, muted palette of cool blues, grays, and subtle earth tones on textured paper. The artist’s signature, Paul Sawyier, is visible in the plate at the lower right. The print is professionally presented under glass in a decorative gilt wood frame with a cream-colored fabric-textured mat and a gold-toned inner fillet. On the verso, an extensive descriptive label from the 1973 Stagg Sawyier Scenes collection provides historical context, identifies the work, and bears the printed signature of Richard W. Rodgers for the Stagg heirs. The backing paper is hand-numbered 1560/4000. A framer’s label from Yates Framing of Lexington, Kentucky, is also present on the reverse.Frame exterior: 15.5 x 12.5 inches.
