Description
This work on paper, titled From the Quarry and attributed to Paul Sawyier (American, 1865-1917), depicts a naturalistic rural scene featuring a man in a wide-brimmed hat leading two white horses hitched to a cart along a shaded dirt road. The composition is bordered by a weathered wooden picket fence to the right and dense leafy trees to the left, rendered with soft washes and dappled light. The artwork is signed P. Sawyier vertically in the lower-left corner. The verso is sealed with brown paper and bears a handwritten label that reads FROM THE QUARRY. The piece is presented in a double mat with a white outer border and a thin teal inner border, housed within a gold-toned wooden frame.24 1/4 x 18 1/4 inches.
