Description
This work, titled Kentucky Arsenal, is by Paul Sawyier (American, 1865-1917) and is executed in watercolor with gouache highlights on paper. The composition features an elevated view of Frankfort, Kentucky, looking toward the Kentucky River. In the foreground are the distinctive crenelated brick chimneys of the Kentucky State Arsenal. The mid-ground depicts a dense townscape with prominent church spires and various buildings, leading to the St. Clair Street Bridge visible in the distance. The work is signed Paul Sawyier in script in the lower right corner. It is presented in a double mat and housed in an ornate, gilded composite frame decorated with foliate and beaded ornamentation. The verso retains a framer label from Burklow’s Frame Shop, located in Frankfort, Kentucky.
