Description

This is a Victorian era quartersawn oak tabletop clerk’s desk or country store countertop organizer dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The chest is constructed from quartersawn white oak, commonly referred to as tiger oak, which displays characteristic medullary ray flakes in the wood grain. The design features a slanted, hinged top lid inset with a dark brown writing surface. The top rail incorporates a recessed pen tray and a circular cutout for an inkwell, which is not included. Below the hinged compartment are four drawers arranged in two banks. Each drawer is constructed with machine-cut dovetail joinery and is fitted with two cast brass or brass-plated pulls featuring a stylized rosette swirl design. The interior of the lid and the main compartment are finished wood. No maker labels or markings were found.Width: 30 inchesDepth: 14 inchesHeight: 12 inches.
