Description
This lot consists of an Underwood No. 5 Standard manual typewriter, an original black enameled metal dust cover, and a rare branded wooden shipping crate. The typewriter is constructed with a heavy cast iron frame featuring a black enameled finish, gold pinstriping, and decorative decals. The front of the frame is marked N 5 UNDERWOOD STANDARD TYPEWRITER N 5. Above the keyboard, the name UNDERWOOD is printed. The paper table displays a large Underwood script logo accompanied by a gold shield emblem. The rear of the frame lists a series of patent dates starting from AUG. 23, 1898, through JULY 1, 1913, followed by the text MANUFACTURED BY UNDERWOOD TYPEWRITER CO., INC., U.S.A. The keyboard features a standard QWERTY layout with four rows of circular glass-topped keys rimmed in metal. The accompanying metal cover is finished in black enamel with stenciled blue and gold lettering reading UNDERWOOD MADE IN U.S.A. and includes a black handle and front latch. The wooden shipping crate is built of rough-hewn planks and features a heavy rope handle. Stenciled text on the crate includes the manufacturer name, New York address, and the marketing slogan THE MACHINE YOU WILL EVENTUALLY BUY positioned above an illustration of the typewriter.Width: 16 inchesDepth: 13 inchesHeight: 10 inches.
