Description
This work on paper, titled Capitol in Winter, is by Paul Sawyier (American, 1865-1917). The composition depicts a snowy scene in Frankfort, Kentucky, featuring the Old State Capitol in the background. A large, centrally positioned bare tree stands beside a stone building with green shutters, while figures and horse-drawn carriages occupy the snow-covered street. The work is rendered in an Impressionist style and is signed Paul Sawyier in the lower left corner. The artwork is presented in a triple mat consisting of dark green, cream, and burgundy layers, housed within a tiered wooden frame with a gold-toned finish. The verso is sealed with brown craft paper and includes a wire for hanging. Based on the evenness of the color and surface texture, this item appears to be a high-quality offset lithograph print after the artist’s original watercolor.Overall Frame: 27 1/2 inches wide x 23 1/2 inches high.
