Description
This contemporary salt-glazed stoneware lidded jar was produced by Hartley Pottery for the 2002 Fort Vallonia Days festival. The cylindrical crock features a slightly flared rim and a matching stoneware lid with a central knob handle. The vessel is decorated with cobalt blue slip-trailed motifs over a light gray-to-tan high-fire stoneware body. The front of the jar is inscribed FT. VALLONIA in arched block letters above a stylized leaf or feather flourish, with the year 2002 below. The lid is accented with a concentric blue ring and a cobalt blue-glazed knob. The base is incised with the script signature Hartley P and the date 02. The lower exterior wall features small incised initials GD, likely representing the individual potter. The interior is glazed with a clean finish, and the rim seat for the lid exhibits a brown-toned glaze. Height: 6 1/4 inches Diameter: 5 1/4 inches.
