Description

A 19th-century style decorative mantel ornament or spill holder, likely once part of a girandole garniture. The piece features a central, tall openwork element decorated with ornate scrolling foliage and a mascaron at the center. This central column is flanked by a reclining sheep to the left and a seated shepherd figure playing a pipe to the right. The figures and column are constructed from gilt metal with a gold-colored finish and feature a flat-backed, hollow-cast design typical of Victorian mantel accessories. The entire assembly is mounted onto a rectangular white marble base characterized by light gray veining. The underside of the marble base shows two open, unthreaded holes flanking the central mounting screw, which suggests the piece may have originally been part of a larger decorative assembly or supported additional ornamental elements such as glass prisms. A typed paper address label for Mr. and Mrs. H. Van Benthuysen is adhered to the bottom.Height: 6.5 inchesWidth: 4.5 inchesDepth: 3 inches.
