Description

This is a cylindrical American salt-glazed stoneware storage crock or jar, likely dating to the late 19th century. The vessel features a two-gallon capacity and is designed with a slightly flared, rounded rim above two concentric incised lines encircling the shoulder. The exterior is finished in a traditional salt glaze, displaying a light tan to grey color palette with a characteristic orange peel texture and minor iron spotting from the kiln. The interior is finished with a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze. A clear impressed number 2 capacity mark is located on the shoulder between the incised decorative lines. The base underside shows modern handwritten cataloguing marks in black ink reading C. 8. While the form and glaze are consistent with regional potteries of the Shenandoah Valley, such as those in Strasburg, Virginia, no maker’s mark is present to confirm a specific attribution.Height: Approximately 11 1/2 inchesBase Diameter: Approximately 7 1/2 inches.
