Description
This five-gallon stoneware crock was manufactured by the Western Stoneware Company of Monmouth, Illinois. The vessel is of cylindrical form with a thick, flared rim and a flat base. It is composed of salt-glazed stoneware with a light cream-colored finish. The front of the crock features cobalt blue stenciled decorations, including a large, detailed maple leaf in the center. Positioned above the leaf is a stylized numeral 5, signifying its gallon capacity, flanked by two small floral or leaf sprigs. A blue oval maker mark is located near the base of the vessel. The stamp is transcribed as WESTERN STONEWARE COMPANY in the upper portion and center, with MONMOUTH, ILL. along the bottom arc. The interior is finished with a dark brown Albany-style slip glaze.
