Description
A pair of hand-carved Chinese figurines crafted from pale olive-green soapstone. The sculptures depict joyful elderly fishermen, a traditional theme in Chinese decorative art representing abundance and longevity. One figure carries a conical hat on his back and holds a string of two fish beside a woven basket. The second figure carries a sack suspended from a pole over his shoulder and holds a single fish. Both figures feature incised detailing in their robes and accessories, along with expressive smiling faces and long beards. The figurines are mounted on dark-stained, openwork carved wooden bases, which are fitted with red felt pads on the undersides. These pieces are characteristic of Chinese export stone carvings produced in the mid-to-late 20th century. Height including base: 5.5 inches Base width: 2.75 inches.
