Description
A tall cylindrical stoneware butter churn of two-gallon capacity. The vessel features a recessed inner rim intended for a lid. It is finished with a two-tone glaze treatment, consisting of a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze on the upper portion and handles, and a cream-colored Bristol glaze on the lower body. The front is decorated with a hand-painted numeral 2 in cobalt blue. The churn includes a large vertical pulled handle and an opposing horizontal applied lug handle. A series of small vertical impressed dash marks are located around the shoulder under the brown glaze. The underside is unglazed and currently retains six felt pads. No manufacturer mark is visible. Capacity: 2 Gallons.
