Description
This 2-gallon salt-glazed stoneware jar features a tall cylindrical form with a slightly flared rim and a recessed inner lip. The piece is finished with a natural salt glaze showing shades of tan and brown with heavy natural mottling and dark mineral staining throughout the body. The upper shoulder bears an impressed three-line maker mark reading H. MELCHER MAKER LOUISVILLE, KY. Above the maker stamp is an incised 2 denoting the vessel’s two-gallon capacity. Henry Melcher was a potter active in Louisville, Kentucky, during the mid-19th century. Capacity: 2 Gallons.
