The D. Bertholf Auction: Tractors, Implements, Guns, Stoneware and Artwork
Lot 84:
Description
This framed work is an impressionistic winter landscape by American artist Paul Sawyier (1865-1917). The scene, titled First Snow, depicts a hillside covered in fresh snow with sparse, bare vegetation, overlooking a misty valley with a distant village. The work is signed Paul Sawyier in the lower right, dated 16, and inscribed Catskills. The reverse of the frame bears a stamp from the KY. DEPT. OF LIBRARY & ARCHIVES and the title is handwritten in pencil in the upper right corner. Given the archival stamp and the presentation, this piece is likely a vintage high-quality print of a Sawyier watercolor from the state archives. The item is professionally framed in a gilt wood frame with a greenish-gray inner edge and a double mat. 22.25 x 19.5 inches.
