Description
This 19th-century hand-colored engraving with aquatint is titled Full Cry, after a painting by William Shayer (1787–1879). The plate was engraved by Charles Richard Stock (1840–1912) and depicts a traditional British fox hunting scene. The composition features a rider in a scarlet coat on a dark horse leaping a fence and stream, followed by hounds and other riders in a rural landscape. The lower margin contains the following transcribed inscriptions: PAINTED BY W. SHAYER. at the lower left, ENGRAVED BY C. R. STOCK. at the lower right, and a central publication line reading LONDON, PUBLISHED FEBY 2nd 1883 BY G. P. Mc QUEEN, 70 BERNERS STREET, OXFORD STREET. The work is housed in a decorative wood frame with a gilded inner edge and a double mat in forest green and red. The reverse is sealed and bears a label for Bluegrass Custom Framing of Lexington, Kentucky. Frame: 24.5 x 30.5 inches.
