Description
This single armchair is constructed from solid quartersawn oak, also known as tiger oak, which is distinguished by prominent medullary ray flecks throughout the wood grain. The piece reflects an early 20th-century Colonial Revival influence, specifically drawing from Dutch or Flemish folk furniture styles. The chair features an exceptionally tall, solid-wood back splat with a scalloped crested top and a central teardrop-shaped cutout. The base of the splat is accented with two carved scroll motifs. The wide, flat arms are gracefully curved and joined to the back with visible through-tenon joinery, while the front supports are square-cut uprights. The solid-plank seat is supported by turned front legs with ring and bulbous motifs, terminating in simple feet, while the rear legs are flared for stability. Heavy-duty construction is evident with visible joinery and support cleats on the underside of the seat.
