Description
An antique American stoneware butter churn of tall, cylindrical form. The vessel features a flared rim with an internal gallery designed to accommodate a lid and is flanked by two applied ear-shaped lug handles on the upper shoulder. The exterior and interior are coated in a dark chocolate-brown slip glaze, consistent with nineteenth-century Albany-type slips. A single numeral 4 is incised on the shoulder, indicating a four-gallon capacity. There are no additional maker marks or stamps visible on the body or base. Height: 16.5 inches Diameter: 8.5 inches.
