Description

This American salt-glazed stoneware vessel is a three-gallon crock featuring a classic cylindrical form with a thick, rounded rim and two applied ear handles. The exterior is finished in a light tan salt glaze with scattered iron spotting, while the interior is coated in a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze. The front of the crock is decorated with a large, hand-painted, slip-trailed cobalt blue stylized numeral 3, which denotes its capacity. This specific decorative motif, featuring a spiral and concentric loops, is commonly referred to in the trade as a bee sting or lazy eight decoration and is frequently attributed to Red Wing Potteries. No maker’s marks or impressed stamps are visible on the body or rim. The underside of the base shows a significant amount of orange-red residue arranged in a circular pattern along with white smudges.Height: Approximately 10.5 inchesDiameter: Approximately 10.5 inches.
