Description
This three-gallon stoneware jug is a classic example of American utilitarian pottery from the late 19th to early 20th century. The vessel features a two-tone glaze, with a dark brown Albany-type slip applied to the neck, shoulder, and handle, and an off-white salt glaze on the lower cylindrical body. The form includes a conical shoulder and a narrow neck with a small, applied loop handle. The front of the jug is decorated with a cobalt blue stencil mark consisting of a heart-shaped border surrounding a stylized numeral 3. This specific motif, often called the Heart Brand, is commonly attributed to the Buckeye Pottery of Macomb, Illinois. The body displays various manufacturing characteristics, including surface pitting, iron spotting, and kiln kisses typical of period stoneware production.
