Description

This pair of mid-19th-century hand-colored engravings consists of fashion plates originally published for the French periodical Petit Courrier des Dames. The scenes depict women in Victorian dress, including tiered crinolines, lace detailing, and accessories such as parasols, fans, and books, set within domestic interiors and garden vignettes. Both prints feature centered printed inscriptions along the lower margin reading Modes de Paris, Petit Courrier des Dames, and Paris, Boulevart des Italiens, 1. One print includes a printer’s mark at the bottom edge identifying Gilquin et Fils Imp. r. des Fosses St. J. 3. Paris. The prints are housed in hand-carved wooden frames executed in the Tramp Art style, featuring layered chip-carving with decorative leaf and star motifs at the corners. The verso of one frame is finished with a split wooden panel and iron hanging wire, while the other is backed with modern corrugated cardboard and a plastic-coated wire.
