Description
This lot features an American half-stock percussion muzzleloading rifle manufactured or retailed by Dickson and Gilmore of Louisville, Kentucky. The rifle is equipped with an octagonal barrel featuring the maker mark DICKSON and GILMORE LOUISVILLE KY stamped into the top flat. The stock is constructed of tiger maple with a prominent cheekpiece on the left side and a white metal or pewter forend tip. The firearm is fitted with double set triggers and brass furniture, including an ornate trigger guard with a finger spur and a crescent-shaped buttplate. The lock plate and hammer exhibit period scrolling engraving. Accompanying the rifle is a cow horn powder horn with a carved wooden base plug and stopper, suspended by a leather cord. The lot also includes a complete original edition of the Louisville Daily Journal newspaper dated Tuesday, March 7, 1854. This newspaper contains a prominent business card advertisement for the gunsmithing firm Dickson and Gilmore at No. 52 Third Street, providing direct period context for the firearm.
