Description
This hand colored lithograph is titled The Tree of Temperance and was published by the firm of Currier and Ives in 1872. The allegorical composition features a central deciduous tree with a trunk inscribed with the words Health, Strength of Body, and Happiness. The foliage contains thirty circular fruits, each inscribed with various virtues and rewards such as Morality, Piety, Success, A Peaceful End, and Honesty. The tree is situated in a pastoral landscape featuring a church to the left, a farmhouse with livestock to the right, and a family of three in the center foreground walking toward the tree. The bottom margin contains several biblical citations and verses from the books of Matthew, Isaiah, Ephesians, Proverbs, and Psalms. Printed text at the bottom left reads Published by Currier and Ives and the bottom right indicates the address 125 Nassau St. New York. A copyright line centered below the image states Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1872 by Currier and Ives in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington. The work is housed in a stained wood frame with a black painted inner bevel and glass glazing.
