Description
Two late 19th-century English earthenware children’s alphabet plates, also known as nursery plates, both featuring canine subjects. The first plate, titled Rupert and Spot, features a central transfer-printed scene of a toddler in a red dress crawling toward a seated dog near a kennel. The scene includes hand-colored highlights in red and green. This central image is surrounded by a black transfer-printed alphabet, which is in turn bordered by an outer Children’s Clock rim featuring Roman numerals I through XII interspersed with decorative scrolls. The reverse bears a circular black transfer mark for the Brownhills Pottery Company (B P Co) of Tunstall, England, along with the registered design number 253083, dating the pattern to 1895. The second plate features a central black transfer print of a seated bulldog with the printed caption MY FACE IS MY FORTUNE below the image. The rim is decorated with a raised, molded alphabet. A small printed rectangular mark containing the letters HC is visible near the dog’s head, a mark associated with the Staffordshire firm Hope and Carter. Both plates are equipped with wire spring hangers for wall display.
