Description
A collection of antique and vintage hardcover books, primarily featuring 19th and early 20th-century literature and scientific works in publisher cloth-bound editions. The group includes multiple works by Mark Twain published by Harper and Brothers in uniform red cloth with gold-stamped spines and the MT monogram on the front covers. Visible Twain titles include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Tom Sawyer Abroad / Tom Sawyer Detective and Other Stories, Life on the Mississippi, and Pudd’nhead Wilson. Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book is present in an edition published by The Century Co., bound in olive green cloth with gold-stamped animal vignettes including a lion, deer, cat, and rooster. Scientific literature is represented by an edition of Charles Darwin’s Descent of Man in red cloth with gold lettering. Also present are Penrod and Penrod and Sam by Booth Tarkington, published as Grosset and Dunlap reprints in faded green cloth. A notable decorative volume is the German-language work In treuer Hut by Gustav Gerok, featuring an elaborate red cloth binding with ornate neo-Renaissance ornamentation stamped in gold, black, and blue-gray. An additional volume is bound in red cloth with an unidentified gold-stamped scrollwork design on the spine. The volumes are generally octavo in format.
