Description

This lot consists of a collection of volumes from Bulwers Works, a multi-volume set of the writings of Victorian novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton (Lord Lytton). The set was published by P.F. Collier of New York in the late 19th century. The books are bound in uniform maroon cloth with decorative gilt stamping on the front covers and spines. The elaborate front cover design features a knights helmet, Roman standards bearing the letters SPQR, olive branches, and a profile portrait of the author in a medallion. A banner is inscribed with his famous quote: The pen is mightier than the sword. The rear covers have a blind-stamped central decorative medallion. The spines bear the title of the series and lists of the individual works contained within each volume, alongside volume numbers in Roman numerals. Titles visible include The Last Days of Pompeii, Harold, The Caxtons, Rienzi, My Novel, Alice, The Coming Race, and The Parisians. The publisher name COLLIER is visible at the foot of each spine. The volumes are octavo in size.
