Description
This 1866 mezzotint engraving, titled Lincoln and his Family, is a posthumous composite portrait of President Abraham Lincoln and his family in a domestic interior. The composition features President Lincoln seated with his youngest son, Thomas Tad Lincoln, leaning against him. Robert Todd Lincoln stands centrally behind a draped table, while Mary Todd Lincoln is seated to the right. The background includes a framed portrait of their deceased son, William Willie Lincoln, hanging on the wall, and a bust of George Washington positioned on a pedestal to the left. The lower margin contains the printed copyright line: Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1866 by William Sartain in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court of the U.S. for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Centered below the image is the title Lincoln and his Family in outline lettering, and the publisher credit: Published by Bradley and Co. 66 N. Fourth St. Philadelphia. The work is an engraving by William Sartain after an original painting by S.B. Waugh. The print is housed in a period-style dark wood frame with a gilded inner liner, secured on the reverse with wooden slats and small nails. No edition number or hand-signature is present.
