Description

This Victorian silver-plated two-handled cup, often referred to as a loving cup or trophy cup, was produced by Simpson, Hall, Miller and Co. of Wallingford, Connecticut. The vessel features a tapered cylindrical body set upon a stepped, flared circular foot. It is flanked by two large, angular handles characterized by decorative scrolled thumbpieces at the top. The front of the cup is ornamented with an engraved gothic-style cartouche with scalloped and pointed borders, containing the cursive presentation inscription: Christmas / 1887 / FROM L.R. The underside of the base features a circular stamped mark. Around the outer edge of the circle are the words SIMPSON-HALL, MILLER & CO. followed by a small cross. Inside this, forming a smaller inner circle, are the words QUADRUPLE PLATE. In the center of the mark is a symbol of a knight’s head in profile. To the right of the circular mark, the design number 333 is stamped in large characters.
