Description
An early 19th-century American shelf clock manufactured by Orton, Preston and Co. in Farmington, Connecticut. The case is constructed from mahogany-veneered wood in a pillar style, featuring a stepped pediment with block terminals and two turned side columns with gilt-painted highlights. The upper section houses a white-painted wooden dial decorated with black Arabic numerals, gilt-scrollwork spandrels at the corners, and a central gilt floral medallion. The lower door is fitted with a two-part glass tablet; the upper pane depicts a hand-painted landscape with a red-roofed house and yellow picket fence, while the lower pane is a reverse-painted black glass tablet featuring a gilt-stenciled fruit and floral basket design. The interior retains a largely intact original paper manufacturer label with a spread-wing American eagle and text reading Improved Clocks With Brass Bushings, Manufactured and Sold by Orton, Preston and Co. Farmington, Conn. The clock contains a mechanical movement with an internal strike bell.
