Description

This hand-colored lithograph is published by the firm Currier & Ives and is titled Maple Sugaring. Early Spring in the Northern Woods. The composition illustrates a 19th-century seasonal work camp in a forest setting. In the foreground, figures are shown boiling maple sap in a large black cauldron over a wood fire and pouring liquid into wooden barrels. A log cabin with a smoking chimney and a woman and child in the doorway occupies the middle ground. The background depicts a snowy forest with additional figures collecting sap from trees. The lower margin contains the following printed inscriptions: Published by Currier & Ives on the left; Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1872 by Currier & Ives in the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington in the center; and 125 Nassau St. New York on the right. The print is presented in a mitered wood frame. The reverse features a torn brown paper dust cover over a cardboard backing, with the letters JKGK written in pencil on the top right corner.
