The Estate of Bessie Mae Carriss
Lot 228:
Description
An antique American country ladder-back side chair constructed from a medium-brown stained wood, likely maple or birch. The back features two vertical posts topped with rounded finials, housing three slightly arched horizontal slats. These slats are secured with visible nail or peg construction at the junctions. The seat is hand-woven using natural rush or splint in a complex herringbone or chevron pattern that wraps around the four seat rails. The chair is supported by turned front posts and four stretchers. The front stretcher is decoratively shaped with a central bulbous turning flanked by smaller carved details. The side and rear stretchers are simple cylindrical turnings. There are no visible maker’s marks, labels, or brandings on the chair’s exterior or underside.
