Description

An assortment of antique earthenware marbles, commonly referred to as commies, housed in a clear glass canning jar. The marbles are fashioned from fired clay and exhibit a range of natural earth tones, including buff, tan, gray, and ochre. Several examples retain traces of original pigment. The spheres are roughly finished, typical of mass-produced low-cost toys from the late 19th to early 20th century, with many displaying irregular shapes and flat spots from the manufacturing process. The collection is contained in a molded clear glass jar featuring a gold-toned metal screw-top lid. The jar body is marked with molded text and measurements; the side bears the words CUPS and OZ in a sans-serif font. Below CUPS is the measurement 1 1/2 and further down is 1/2. Below OZ is the number 12. The glass also features vertical molded ribs. No maker marks are present on the marbles themselves.Height: 5 inchesMarble Diameter: 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch.
