Description

A two-piece set of utilitarian American stoneware comprising a large mixing bowl and a matching shallow circular dish or underplate. Both pieces are wheel-thrown and finished with a dark, glossy Albany-type slip glaze, resulting in a deep brownish-black color. The mixing bowl features a deep body with a prominent, wide, flat overhanging collar at the rim, tapering to a flat, glazed base. The interior and exterior of the bowl show characteristic glaze variations, including scattered white specks or kiln-related pops. The accompanying plate or underplate is shallow with a slightly raised, unglazed vertical rim. The interior of the plate displays concentric throwing rings from the potter’s wheel. Both the bowl’s rim and the plate’s rim, as well as the underside of the plate’s flange, are left unglazed, exposing the light-colored clay body. The underside of the bowl is glazed but bears no visible maker’s marks, stamps, or capacity numerals. The underside of the plate is likewise glazed without any identifiable characters or signatures.Diameter: 11 3/4 inches across the bowl rimHeight: 6 1/4 inches.
