Vintage Applique Sunbonnet Sue Pattern Quilt
Description
A large handmade quilt featuring the traditional Sunbonnet Sue pattern in an appliqué technique. The design consists of forty-eight individual figures arranged in six columns and eight rows. The figures depict a young girl in profile wearing a large bonnet that hides her face, a common motif in American quilting. The color palette includes teal, pink, yellow, and purple. Each figure is constructed from two coordinating fabrics: a solid color for the bonnet and apron, and a patterned fabric featuring small florals or polka dots for the dress. These pieces are applied to an off-white cotton or cotton-blend ground using a decorative embroidery stitch, likely a blanket stitch. The background is finished with hand-quilting in a grid pattern interspersed with stylized leaf and flower motifs. The quilt is finished with a dark green fabric binding.
