Description
A mid-20th-century obsolete security badge for the rank of Security Chief within the Illinois Department of Public Welfare. The badge is constructed in a traditional eagle-top sunburst design. The top features a perched eagle with outstretched wings. The central circular seal depicts the State of Illinois seal, featuring an eagle with a shield and a ribbon in its beak. The badge is manufactured from two-tone metal, consisting of a gold-toned wash or plating over a silver-toned base metal. The reverse side is equipped with a vertical pin and a rolling safety catch. There are no visible maker’s marks or hallmarks on the reverse. The Department of Public Welfare was the precursor to the Illinois Department of Mental Health, which was renamed in 1961.
