Description
A large five gallon stoneware shoulder jug manufactured by the Western Stoneware Company of Monmouth, Illinois. The vessel features a beehive form with a two-tone glaze, consisting of a cream-colored Bristol glaze on the body and a brown-glazed shoulder and neck. A single loop handle is applied at the neck. The front of the jug is decorated with a large cobalt blue capacity mark 5 flanked by two stylized floral motifs. A circular maker stamp in blue ink is located near the base, reading Western Stoneware Company Monmouth, Ill. The piece exhibits manufacturing characteristics typical of early 20th-century American stoneware, including minor pitting and firing imperfections.Height: 17.5 inchesDiameter: 11.5 inches.
