Description
An elaborately carved walnut hall chair in the Italian Renaissance Revival or Neo-Renaissance style, following the traditional sgabello form. The tall, narrow back features intricate pierce-carved decoration, including a central foliate mask, often referred to as a Green Man, flanked by two winged mythological female figures shown in profile. The crest is topped with a winged lion mask over a horizontal rail decorated with foliate scrolls. The solid wooden seat contains a recessed circular center and light incised decorative motifs at the corners. The piece is supported at the front by a single, richly carved trestle-style panel featuring high-relief fruit clusters, including grapes and pomegranates, flanked by two winged female figures that form the front supports and terminate in scrolled feet. A small carved mask is situated at the base of the front panel. The reverse of the chair is finished with simple shaped support boards. No maker marks or labels are present.Height: 48 inchesWidth: 21 inches.
