Description

This lot features a limited edition photomechanical lithographic reproduction of a watercolor painting titled On a Sunday Afternoon by American Impressionist artist Paul Sawyier (1865-1917). The scene depicts a horse-drawn carriage with two passengers traveling along a hazy, tree-lined road, characteristic of Sawyier’s Kentucky landscapes. The work is rendered in a soft, atmospheric style with a palette emphasizing blues, violets, and muted earth tones. A facsimile signature is present in the lower right corner, and the piece is hand-numbered 3242/3500 in ink just below the signature. The artwork is housed in a decorative molded gilt wood frame with a linen-textured mat and a thin blue inner fillet. Affixed to the verso is an extensive authentication document from Paul Sawyier Galleries, Inc., Frankfort, Kentucky. This label states the print was produced in 1985 by Stevenson Photo Company and provides a biography of the artist along with historical context for the original watercolor painting. Frame: 27 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches.
