Description

A collection of five watercolor paintings on paper by the Kentucky Impressionist artist Paul Sawyier (American, 1865-1917). The works feature localized regional scenes characteristic of the artist’s body of work, rendered in a soft, atmospheric style with a muted color palette. Subjects include a vertical composition of a man leading two horses through a stream, signed Paul Sawyier in the lower left, and a carriage scene before a historic building identified on a verso label as Wilson’s Store at Keene. Additional scenes include a snowy town view with a domed capitol building signed Sawyier in the lower left, a rainy street scene with figures and umbrellas, and a street scene featuring a metal truss bridge. The paintings are presented in decorative gilt frames with cream and green matting. The verso of four frames features a stamped mark for Brennans Gallery, 533 Main St, Shelbyville, KY 40065. One frame includes a typed label reading Wilson’s Store at Keene by Paul Sawyier.
