Description

This antique mantel clock was manufactured by the Seth Thomas Clock Company in the late 19th century. The case features a neoclassical architectural temple form finished in wood-grained Adamantine, a patented celluloid veneer over wood. The front is accented by double faux-onyx columns topped with Corinthian-style metal capitals. The lower section of the case displays incised scrollwork and a bird motif. Gilded cast metal lion-head handles with rings are mounted to each side. The clock is supported by four ornate foliate-form cast metal feet. The ornate cast brass dial has a decorative scrolling center with individual white porcelain cartouches featuring black Arabic numerals. It includes black-finished metal hands and a regulation arbor above the 12 o’clock position. The dial is marked MADE BY SETH THOMAS CLOCK CO. THOMASTON CONN. U.S.A. at the bottom. The reverse of the case bears a partial original paper label titled DIRECTIONS for the Adamantine Clock, which notes a patent date of September 7, 1880. The internal 8-day mechanical time-and-strike movement is stamped with the manufacturer’s diamond-shaped ST logo and strikes on a coiled wire cathedral gong.
