The Historic 1840 Tucker House Bed and Breakfast Auction: A Distinguished Offering of Primitives & Antiques
Lot 60:
Description
A rectangular toleware serving tray from the mid to late 19th century, featuring a raised gallery and two integral cut-out handles. The tray is constructed of japanned sheet metal and decorated with a combination of hand-painted and stenciled elements. The central scene is rendered in a naive folk art style, depicting a young girl in a sunbonnet, yellow bodice, and green striped skirt standing in a garden landscape. Beside her, a calico cat is perched upon a small stool. The background includes a large multi-story building or manor house situated on a hill. A wide border surrounds the scene, decorated with stenciled gold and polychrome floral and foliate motifs, including four butterfly designs located in the corners. The reverse of the tray has a plain black japanned finish. No maker marks, signatures, or labels are visible.
