Description
This World War I era souvenir spoon is manufactured from sterling silver and commemorates Camp Zachary Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky. The handle terminal features a pierced, die-cut silhouette of a United States Army doughboy soldier standing with a rifle. The stem is embossed with the words CAMP TAYLOR in a vertical orientation. Along the right edge of the handle terminal, the spoon is incised with the text LOUISVILLE KY. On the reverse of the handle, the item is stamped with the word STERLING and a manufacturer hallmark consisting of the letters G, L, and P arranged within a three-lobed trefoil pattern. This mark identifies the maker as the George L. Paine Company of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, a firm active during the early 20th century. Camp Zachary Taylor was a major National Army training cantonment established in 1917.
