Description
This is a countertop wrapping paper dispenser of the type commonly utilized in general stores and retail shops during the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The construction features a pair of black-painted cast iron upright supports with a distinctive H-shaped profile, mounted to a thick rectangular wooden plank base. A secondary wooden rail is fixed across the top of the iron supports for structural stability. The unit holds a single roll of paper on a central wooden dowel. A spring-tensioned wire frame holds a flat metal cutting bar against the front of the paper roll to facilitate clean tearing of the paper. The dispenser is currently fitted with a decorative roll of brown kraft paper printed with various late-Victorian style advertisements in black ink. Featured text and graphics include the Stag Shop Men’s Clothiers of Louisville, Ky. with a stag’s head logo, Weber Piano-Fortes advertising Best Pianos Made, Reed & Barton manufacturers of fine electro-plated ware, and Pomeroyís Trusses. Other subjects mentioned include fine carriages, Cheney Broís silks, and stereopticons. The repeating composite layout and crispness of the printing indicate that the paper roll is a contemporary reproduction intended for gift wrapping or display. – 7"x27"x13"
