Description

This lot consists of two distinct 19th-century American country or primitive side chairs. Both chairs are constructed from mixed hardwoods with a dark amber-brown stained finish and feature thick, shaped plank seats. The chairs are built with turned legs and H-form stretchers, utilizing traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery. The first chair features a modified slat-back design with two horizontal slats; the lower slat is supported by three vertical turned spindles anchored into the seat. The second chair features a spindle-back design with five vertical spindles extending from the seat to a curved, flat-topped crest rail. The second chair also displays decorative black-stained ring turnings on the front legs. No maker marks, stamps, or labels are visible on either piece.
