The Historic 1840 Tucker House Bed and Breakfast Auction: A Distinguished Offering of Primitives & Antiques
Lot 34:
Description
This print depicts a late 19th-century street scene of Main Street in Louisville, Kentucky. The composition features a deep perspective view populated with numerous horse-drawn carriages, pedestrians, and horse-drawn streetcars, including one clearly marked MAIN ST. The street is flanked by dense rows of multi-story commercial buildings. Printed text in Fraktur script at the lower right corner reads Main Stra?e and Louisville, Ky., Dienstag, 1. which translates to Main Street, Louisville, Ky., Tuesday, the 1st. The print is likely an illustration from a German-language American periodical of the era, such as the Louisville Anzeiger. It is presented in a vintage silver-toned wooden frame featuring a repeating scroll-patterned molding and a red bole undercoat. The reverse is secured with finishing nails and contains two integral cardboard hanging tabs. No plate marks or artist signatures are present.
