Description
This four-gallon cylindrical stoneware crock was manufactured by the John Bauer pottery in Louisville, Kentucky. The vessel is constructed with a thick, rounded rim and two applied lug handles. The exterior features a light tan or buff-colored salt glaze, while the interior is finished with a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze. The front of the crock bears a stamped maker mark that reads JOHN BAUER. MANUFACTURER REED ST. LOUISVILLE, KY. A large incised number 4 is located to the left of the stamp to indicate the vessel’s capacity. The base shows three white adhesive pads and a dark circular plug, likely a firing or repair mark. Capacity: 4 gallons.
