Lot 285:
Description
This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph by Nathaniel Currier features a full-length standing portrait of George Washington, based on the Lansdowne portrait by Gilbert Stuart. The first president is depicted in a black suit standing beside a table draped with a blue cloth, upon which books and a scroll are placed. A harbor view is visible in the background through an opening. Below the image, the text reads WASHINGTON followed by the epitaph FIRST IN WAR_FIRST IN PEACE, AND FIRST IN THE HEARTS OF HIS COUNTRYMEN. A publisher’s credit line at the bottom center reads Lith. & Pub. by N. Currier, 2 Spruce St. N.Y. The print is housed in a wide, mitered wood veneer frame and is protected by glass. The back of the frame has been reinforced with a modern hardboard panel and fitted with a hanging wire.
