Description
This large cylindrical stoneware storage crock was produced by the John Lauer pottery on Preston Street in Louisville, Kentucky. The vessel is constructed with a wheel-turned body, a heavy rounded overhanging rim, and two hand-applied lug handles situated on the upper shoulder. The entire piece is finished in a thick, lustrous dark brown-to-black slip glaze, characteristic of manganese-saturated or Albany-type slips of the late 19th century. The surface displays a high gloss with typical manufacturing artifacts, including minor pitting and glaze pops. The upper shoulder features a clear, multi-line impressed maker’s mark: JOHN BAUER (arched), MANUFACTR, PRESTON ST (flanked by leaf motifs), and LOUISVILLE KY. An impressed X is located to the left of the text, serving as a capacity mark. Capacity: 10 Gallons.
