Lot 118:
Description
This 19th-century regional American stoneware jug was produced by H. Melcher in Louisville, Kentucky. The piece features an ovoid body tapering to a narrow neck with a thick, collared rim and a single applied strap handle attached at the neck and shoulder. It is finished in a dark brown salt glaze with a mottled texture and several prominent reddish-orange firing marks, known as kiln kisses, on the body. An impressed oval maker mark on the shoulder is inscribed H. Melcher / MAKER / LOUISVILLE KY. The construction shows characteristic horizontal throwing rings throughout the body. Cracks as pictured.
