Description

This fireplace ensemble consists of a pair of primitive hand-forged wrought iron andirons, a cast iron fire grate, and a contemporary three-panel folding screen. The andirons feature vertical shafts with a central diamond-shaped taper, each topped with a circular loop finial. They are supported by two arched, splayed front feet and a rear horizontal bar. The heavy-duty rectangular fire grate is constructed of thick cast iron bars designed to hold fuel above the hearth for improved airflow. The modern three-panel screen is composed of fine black metal mesh set within a simple iron frame, featuring small pull handles on the side panels. No maker marks or stamps are present on the metal components. The bricks in the hearth show impressed marks for the Laclede-Christy Clay Products Company of St. Louis, Missouri; these marks identify the building’s masonry and are not associated with the metalware items.
