Description
This framed textile artwork features a hand-stitched petit point needlepoint depicting a pastoral scene in the medieval millefleurs style. The central composition shows a female figure, possibly a shepherdess, dressed in a long, draped gown and holding a tall staff. She is situated in a landscape populated by a white lamb, a bird in flight, and stylized floral and foliate motifs. The scene is worked in wool or silk threads on a canvas ground. The central sienna-colored background is enclosed within an ornamental scrollwork border, all rendered in needlepoint, and surrounded by a wide neutral cream-colored field. The piece is mounted in a polished wooden frame with a decorative burl-pattern veneer and a black-painted outer edge. A label on the paper backing of the frame identifies the framer as Bluegrass Frames, located at 4920 Shelbyville Rd., Louisville, Kentucky.
